5 week class
Prerequisites: Beggining Relief or Equivalent Experience
In this class students will learn a multiple colored relief printing technique that was originally developed by Picasso in the late 1950s. Students will design and create a three layered linocut print in this five week course.

Materials: For student to provide
-5 x 7 or 8 x 10 linoleum block. Your choice.
-carving tools. Recommend the Lee Valley 5 piece starter set.
-2-4 sheets of cotton rag paper. Recommend Stonehenge in white, ivory, or grey.
-small pad of newsprint.
-registration tabs, at least 20ct. (2 tabs for each print)
-2 metal low-profile registration pins.
-carbon transfer paper. (optional)
-pencil, ball point pen.
Dates: Sundays April 2, 9, (Skipping Easter Sunday the 16th), 23, 30, May 7
Class 1: Short History of relief printing, specifically the reduction process. Examples.
DEMO: toning a block, registering a block, transferring drawing onto block, tips on carving
Class 2: More examples of reduction prints. Registering your paper. Tearing/deckling paper.
DEMO: Inking and printing the first layer, lightest color. Clean up demo.
Class 3: Studio work time. Ask questions. Extra press provided.
DEMO: second layer printing.
Class 4: Discuss multiple block printing. Different technique to accomplish similar result.
Studio work time. Ask questions, Extra press provided.
DEMO: third layer printing.
Class 5: Editioning and signing. Studio work time.
Katie Machain is a Missoula based artist who graduated from the University of Montana in 2013 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She practices traditional methods of printmaking from her small home studio, and specializes in the reduction relief process. Her work has been shown in several local businesses throughout Missoula, including the ZACC in December of 2016.
