NEEDED: Artists looking to collaborate with Missoula’s Kindergartners on original Monster Art
Zootown Arts Community Center (ZACC) and SPARK!/ Any Given Child Missoula team up once again to showcase the 5th Annual Missoula Monster Project.
How did the show get started?
Originally conceived by nine year-old Asa Smetanka, this show is a collaboration between children and adult artists, working together to create “monster art” based on monsters dreamed up by Missoula kindergarteners. Kindergarten classes from three Missoula County public schools have created original monster drawings.
How does it work?
We collect the children's monster, and digitize them. You (an adult of 18+ years) sign up via the link below, and we will assign you a artist a child’s monster to interpret, using your own unique style and medium. You will have an image and some written details to guide your monster design process.
Will we be able to see all the monsters?
YES! The results will be displayed in a September 13th art show, featuring both the original child-drawn monsters and the artists’ works. This is one of the best shows of the year, and will be the first in our new downtown location.
What's the timeline?
Due to the volume of monsters and signups, once you signup it may be up to 3 days before you receive your monster information via email. Once you have your monster information, you will then have until August to create your monster.

Please read the following rules carefully.
SIZE: Pieces can be no larger than 8" by 8" - including the frame. ABSOLUTEY NO EXCEPTIONS.
READY TO HANG: Pieces must be ready to hang. ABSOLUTEY NO EXCEPTIONS. If it is 2D then there MUSTbe a wire on the back. If it is 3D you must provide a shelf (with hardware) that can attached to the wall and bear the weight of your piece.
DEADLINE: Please drop your piece off to the ZACC between August 1st and August 15th.
MONSTER PROCEEDS: By participating in the Missoula Monster Project, artists agree to donate their physical monster and 100% of the proceeds from any sale. I.E. Monsters who are not adopted during the show will not be returned to artists, but will still be utilized to raise money for youth art programming at future events.
COMMIT: By signing up you have committed to following the above rules and completing a ready-to-hang monster (and making a kindergartner happy).

The rules set above are not meant to hinder your creative process, but to ensure that we are able to host an amazing event and stay friends with all of you. Everyone is held to the same set of rules - including participating staff and board - to ensure the best overall experience for all involved. We truly appreciate you following the rules, but if the thought crosses your mind, please consider the following:
SIZE: Due to the volume of monsters (over 400 to hang) and the limited space in our gallery, pieces larger than 8" x 8" will absolutey NOT be accepted. Children and their families are VERY excited to see the monsters, and will be hugely disappointed if theirs is missing. Please stay within the required dimensions.
READY TO HANG: Because each monster is unique and has unique needs, the ZACC is unable to provide hanging hardware. It takes lots of volunteers multiple hours to hang the show - when everything is ready to go. Please take it easy on our volunteers and provide them with what they need to get the job done.
DEADLINE: If your piece is not in by the deadline, we might assume you didn't do it, and then reassign to a monster rescue committee member. This is a process and it puts the pressure on the rescue committee. We'd rather you just get your monster in on time.
COMMIT: We understand that things happen, BUT please, please remember that your committment is not only to us, the ZACC, but some awesome little kindergartner.
