Missoula Festival of the Dead

Thursday, November 2, 2017 will mark the 25thyear of Missoula’s Festival of the Deadan annual, all-inclusive multicultural event that honors life and death through community involvement in the arts.

 

Inspired by the common experience of death and community need for expressive arts surrounding mortality, the Festival includes a month of arts workshops, events, and performances, culminating in the annual Missoula Festival of the Dead processional down Higgins Avenue to Caras Park.  The overarching theme for our 25th anniversary is “Inheritance:  Gifts from the Dead,” to reflect the importance of those who have gone before us in shaping our lives.

 

 

As a program of the Zootown Arts Community Center, the Missoula Festival of the Dead will continue to offer free workshops for the community, a group art show, and healthy conversations about death and dying. The Festival partners with numerous organizations to offer amazing events designed to engage the community more deeply in the final Festival procession, as well as open new doorways for catharsis and communal healing.

 

This year, you can look forward to a celebration of 25 years with an Ancestors Potluck (think of your granny’s favorite dish!), the Missoula Mandala Project, a ZACC art opening, Writing with the Dead workshops, movie screenings, a DIY obituary-writing workshop, Poets of the Dead, and more.  All of the events are open and welcome to anyone who wants to participate.

Proposals for Performances: Pre- and Post-Procession

The Festival of the Dead Committee welcomes Proposals for Performances to participate in the Pre- and Post-Procession events on November 2, 2016.  Please fill out the information below and submit to ZACC by October 1, 2017.  All decisions will be made by the Festival of the Dead Performance Committee.  Performers are expected to be self-sufficient, professional, respectful, and pick up all materials/debris after their performance.
